B&B Info Canada - Canada Select

Explanation of the Canada Select Accommodation Rating Program:

Establishments voluntarily participate in Canada Select and accommodations are rated within five categories:

Modest accommodations meeting the Canada Select standards of cleanliness, comfort and safety.

A half-star is awarded to properties whose overall quality of facilities significantly exceeds the 1 star rating

Moderate accommodations with additional facilities and some amenities.

A half-star is awarded to properties whose overall quality of facilities significantly exceeds the 2 star rating

Above average accommodations with a greater range of facilities, guest amenities and services available.

A half-star is awarded to properties whose overall quality of facilities significantly exceeds the 3 star rating

Exceptional accommodations with an extensive range of facilities, guest amenities and services.

A half-star is awarded to properties whose overall quality of facilities significantly exceeds the 4 star rating

Luxurious properties. Among the very best in the country in terms of their outstanding facilities, guest services, and quality provided.

The majority of the properties are in the 2 to 3 star range. There are only a handful of 5 star properties in all of Canada.

How Does A Property Receive a Canada Select Rating?

A full evaluation is conducted biannually (every second year) for every property requesting participation in Canada Select. If a property upgrades/renovates or complaints have been received, an additional evaluation could be undertaken. Additional inspections may also be carried out, unannounced, at any point during the calendar year.

Once a property has been categorized, it is evaluated on the extent of facilities, the services and amenities provided and the quality of the overall property. All properties, regardless of their star level, must also meet stringent cleanliness and state of repair guidelines.

Each category and star level has distinct criteria, which must be achieved.

A star rating from 1 to 5 is awarded based on the results of the evaluation. A half-star rating from 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 is also awarded if the overall quality significantly exceeds the star rating. Each star level reflects specific consumer expectations.

A one star rating reflects that a property is clean and comfortable and has met or exceeded nationally accepted criteria in the area of facilities, services, amenities and quality of the accommodation.
